How is keyword difficulty calculated?

When quantifying the competition of a keyword into a metric, there’s only one aspect of the website quality taken into consideration – the backlink profile.

Each website ranking in the 1st SERP is given a certain score based on the quality and quantity of the backlinks.

The authority of your competitors can be measured in various ways. In KWFinder, you can find the Link Profile Strength metric that estimates the quality of the website’s link profile.

The calculation is based on the selected metrics by Moz, Majestic and our know-how, namely:

Our main focus is providing proven data in a super user-friendly interface. When Peter, our founder and CEO, was working on the keyword difficulty formula, he was searching for a combination of factors that would correlate with the organic search results on the 1st SERP.

In other words, the higher is the difficulty score, the harder it is to rank for the keyword on the 1st SERP. Analogically, the lower difficulty should indicate an easier job to make it to the top organic search results.

The calculation is based on the selected metrics by Moz, Majestic and our know-how, namely:

  • Domain Authority
  • Page Authority
  • Citation Flow
  • Trust Flow

The calculation consists of the following steps:

  1. We calculate the overall Link Profile Strength (LPS) for every website that ranks on the 1st Google SERP based on the selected Moz and Majestic metrics.
  2. Each metric has a different weight to make sure the results estimate how the real rankings evolve as much as possible.
  3. Finally, we take into account both high and low LPS values to calculate the overall Keyword SEO Difficulty.
  4. The final value estimated how hard it is to start ranking on the 1st SERP so it takes more than ever into consideration websites with low LPS.
  5. It’s absolutely alright when a low-authority website outranks high-authority websites and that’s exactly what Keyword Difficulty focuses on.

To calculate Keyword Difficulty, we analyze the search results for a keyword and look at the number of referring domains the top 10 ranking pages have. In simple terms, the more referring domains across the top ranking pages, the higher the Keyword Difficulty.

Our metric is widely considered the most accurate one. Keyword Difficulty doesn’t take into account any on-page factors.

Keyword Difficulty evaluates the chances of getting into top 10 of search results (not top 3 or top 1). Apart from backlink profiles and content relevancy, many additional ranking factors come into play among the results of the first page of any search.

Keyword Difficulty scale

We measure Keyword Difficulty on a scale from 0 to 100, with the latter being the hardest.

The scale is not linear. Each value on it corresponds to the estimated number of referring domains (RDs) a page needs in order to get to the first page of search results.

Here’s the relation between the Keyword Difficulty and the number of RDs needed:

If you’re aiming for a keyword with KD 40, you’re likely to need approximately 56 RDs to get into the top 10 search results.
